The body of Jian Wei Fu, the Chinese national who fell into the Demerara River while working on the on the new Demerara River Bridge was recovered Friday morning.
The News Room was reliably informed that around 09:20hrs, workers at the new Demerara River Bridge observed something floating in the river.
As such, they informed the security who made further checks and discovered it was a body. The Police was subsequently informed and ranks attached to the marine section responded and fished the body out of the river.
The body was escorted a nearby wharf where Fu was positively identified. It was then escorted to the Ezekiel Funeral home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Fu fell into the Demerara River during rigging and offloading operations at about 20:20 hrs on Wednesday.
“The worker was carried by the swift current downstream. Immediate search and rescue operations were initiated by the company’s emergency response team, with assistance from the Coast Guard and police units on night patrol in the area,” a release from the Ministry of Public Works noted.
