Fire destroys CID storage room at Eve Leary

Investigators are probing the cause of a fire that destroyed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) storage room at Eve Leary, Georgetown on Wednesday night.

Reports are that the fire started at 18:27 hrs.

The single- storey structure was used as a storage facility, formerly known as the CID Identification room.

In a statement, the Guyana Fire Service said upon being alerted, water tenders and a team of twelve firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“Police personnel were instrumental in the initial firefighting efforts, using 6kg and 4kg dry powder extinguishers along with buckets of sand to suppress the fire before the firefighters arrived,” the GFS said.

The firefighters went into action and “swiftly” extinguished the fire.

However, the building and its contents were destroyed.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
