New Amsterdam Councillor says Mayor engaged in bullying tactics, leadership lacks transparency

The suspension of Councillor Carol Trim-Bagot from her duties by the APNU-dominated Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam has become a controversial topic, with Trim-Bagot revealing underlying tensions within the body.

The suspension follows ongoing concerns regarding Trim-Bagot’s conduct, which has been characterised as disruptive and disrespectful towards both the Mayor and fellow Councillors.

At a press conference last Friday, Trim-Bagot, flanked by other PPP/C councillors, expressed her discontent with the decision.

“Today is a sad day for the people of the town,” she asserted, noting that her suspension comes within a broader narrative of political silencing.

She accused the Mayor, Wainwright McIntosh, of bullying and acting outside of his official capacity and positioned herself as a defender of democratic principles against those authoritarian tactics.

Trim-Bagot now call for a motion to remove the Mayor since she believes that the current leadership is failing to uphold the values necessary for effective governance.

The councillor also expressed frustration over financial transparency, holding up a receipt for $462,000 from 2020 that she claims remains unaccounted for.

“I need to see this check; it is in one of the councillor’s names. What was paid for with this?”

Trim-Bagot made allegations of cronyism, pointing to a list of lands associated with the families and friends of current councillors.

“They have usurped their privilege regarding how they should operate,” she claimed, arguing that such practices erode public trust.

She framed her opposition as a fight against systemic injustice and says she endeavours to rally public support and challenge the status quo.
