Years of waiting ended for fifty-six residents from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) on Sunday when they received their Certificates of Title, formally granting them legal ownership of the lands they occupy.
This distribution fulfills a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a recent outreach in the region. The beneficiaries are from the communities of Barnwell, De William, and Philadelphia.
President Ali personally handed out the Certificates of Title during an early morning visit, accompanied by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal and Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar.
In his address, President Ali emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s plan to formalize land ownership and enhance regional infrastructure. “You will now be able to use this important asset to secure loans for home improvements, expand your businesses, and build prosperity for your family,” President Ali stated.
He also mentioned that the government will work to relocate residents from areas that cannot be regularized. “We are pleased to be part of this extraordinary journey in your life. It’s not just about the land titles; it’s about providing infrastructure—building roads, expanding roadways, and ensuring access to water, electricity, and drainage,” the President noted. “We are committed to offering a complete package for a better and more prosperous life.”
Region Three is progressing rapidly, and President Ali pledged ongoing support to ensure every citizen enjoys a prosperous life. “We are seeing new private ports, hotels, and apartments being built. At the same time, we are expanding agriculture, opening new lands for farming, and supporting our farmers to thrive,” he added.
Minister Croal announced that similar exercises will be conducted in other communities in the coming weeks. He encouraged residents who have not yet registered for their Certificates of Title to do so promptly. “This is an important process. By securing ownership of the land you occupy, you are securing the future of your children,” Croal emphasized.
