In a standout debut, Guyana’s Ebo McNeil claimed a memorable bronze medal in the Boys’ Under-17 3000m at the CARIFTA Games in Trinidad and Tobago, delivering a highlight for the Caribbean nation on day two.
Leading at one stage, McNeil battled hard in the final stretch to clock 9:22.61, finishing just behind the gold and silver medalists from host nation Trinidad and Tobago.
Christopher Sammy took gold in 9:11.51, with Armani Dillon claiming silver in 9:12.22.
The bronze adds to Guyana’s overall medal tally — now four medals in total: one gold, one silver, and two bronzes — as the competition heads into its final day.
While McNeil’s performance was a bright spot, the day was marked by mixed results for Guyana’s team.
Guyana’s young stars showed promise in the Boys’ Under-20 800m, with Javon Roberts and Kaidon Persaud securing spots in Monday’s final.
Roberts, the reigning Under-17 champion, won his heat in a close finish (1:56.83), while Persaud finished third with a solid 1:55.00.

Bryson Anderson also advanced in the Under-17 category, finishing fourth with 2:01.66, but teammate Keith Shepherd narrowly missed out.
Walton Alleyne kept Guyana’s sprint hopes alive by winning his heat in the Boys’ Under-20 200m in 21.97 seconds, earning a place in Monday’s final. Trevor Easton narrowly missed out on qualification.
Disappointment struck in the relay events, as the Boys’ Under-17 4x100m team was disqualified due to a baton exchange error, despite finishing second in their heat. The Under-20 team also failed to advance.
In individual sprints, none of Guyana’s athletes made it to the finals. Last year’s silver medallist Alleyne was among those to miss out in the Girls’ U-20 200m, along with Kiandra Fraser and others in both categories.
Attoya Harvey, a decorated CARIFTA athlete, finished seventh in the Girls’ U-17 3000m final with a time of 10:41.88, while teammate Jennifer Byass placed eighth.
In the Boys’ U-20 long jump, Duel Europe and Zakiah Jacobs finished outside the top ten. Charissa December, who qualified for the Girls’ U-20 400m hurdles final, was a no-show, ending her campaign early.
