Plans for credit transfers from technical institutes to UG in the pipeline

President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Tuesday said plans to facilitate credit transfers from technical institutes to the University of Guyana (UG) are in the pipeline.

President Ali was speaking at an event at UG’s Turkeyen Campus.

The Head of State said discussions are ongoing with UG’s Vice Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin on this venture.

“How do we integrate the technical institutes that we’re investing billions of dollars in, to the curriculum of the university, so that credit transfers is integrated, and it’s a smooth transition?” he asked.

Beyond this initiative, President Ali revealed plans for a global exchange of education.

“We will be investing in facilities in the different regions, but at the main campus here we may very well say that in the medium-term strategy we will invest, once we get the certification, in a facility for global intake,” President Ali revealed.

Currently, at UG, he said there is a regional intake. But the global exchange will have to be strategic, possibly targeting areas where there is a manpower shortage globally such the medical sciences, aviation, marine studies and engineering.

He further highlighted that the Minister of Education is actively engaging with the Cyril Potter College of Education and UG to enhance teacher training programmes. Likewise, these programmes will not only be intended for Guyanese.

“…but more importantly, how do we develop a regionally attractive programme to have regional students,” President Ali said.

He added that Guyana aims to develop specialised degree programmes for teachers throughout the region.

“It does not make sense for every small economy to make the same investment, so how about if we work with our international partners in making this the training ground for all our teachers regionally, and doing so using technology as a backbone. So, you don’t you lose your teachers from the classroom,” President Ali explained.

The recently launched Guyana Digital School will also be accessible to students from every country in the Caribbean region.
