Guyana has launched a bold bid to host matches in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL). The government aims to bring the excitement of international cricket to the regions of Essequibo and Berbice.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali revealed the government’s official request to participate in the bidding process during the grand opening of the Deeds and Commercial Registries Authority Building in Suddie, Region Two.
The move signifies a significant step in Guyana’s ambition to broaden the reach of top-tier cricket beyond the capital, Georgetown, and showcase the nation’s regional development globally.
President Ali highlighted the substantial investment the government has made in Essequibo and Berbice over the past four years, totaling close to G$100 billion across various sectors.
The new Anna Regina Stadium, expected to be completed shortly, is earmarked as a key venue in the bid.
The government also aims to secure matches at the iconic Albion Sports Complex and the newly constructed Palmyra Stadium, further spreading the cricketing action across the regions.
“…that is important because it is not only about the cricket and spectators, it is about the international positioning of the area on a global audience from the television viewership aspect,” President Ali stated, emphasizing the strategic importance of hosting WCPL matches.
Guyana is one of three teams competing in the WCPL, alongside the Barbados Royals and the Trinbago Knight Riders.
In 2024, the tournament was played before the men’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
However, the 2025 edition could be scheduled after the men’s tournament, which begins on August 14th.
Guyana’s bid comes as the nation prepares to host the finals of the men’s CPL for a fourth consecutive year, solidifying its reputation as a premier cricketing destination in the Caribbean.
The potential to bring the WCPL to Essequibo and Berbice would not only introduce world-class women’s cricket to new audiences but also significantly boost local economies and tourism.
