Golden Jaguars’ Gold Cup dream dashed by Guatemala

Heartbreak for Guyana as Guatemala secured a 2-0 victory on home soil, extinguishing the Golden Jaguars’ hopes of a second CONCACAF Gold Cup appearance.

On Tuesday night, the dramatic second-leg encounter at Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City saw the Central American nation overturn Guyana’s slender 3-2 advantage from the first leg in Barbados, ultimately winning 4-3 on aggregate.

Guatemala asserted their dominance early on, with Rubio Rubín opening the scoring in the 11th minute, levelling the aggregate score. The hosts then sealed their qualification in the 76th minute, as Erick Lemus found the net, sending the home crowd into raptures.

Guyana’s night went from bad to worse when goalkeeper Quillan Roberts was shown a red card in the 84th minute for handling the ball outside the penalty area, further compounding their woes.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the Golden Jaguars put in a valiant effort against a side ranked ninth in CONCACAF, a significant achievement considering Guyana’s 19th position.

The team’s performance highlighted their progress despite failing to replicate their 2019 Gold Cup qualification.

Guatemala’s victory secured their place in the 2025 Gold Cup group stage, joining Costa Rica, Guadeloupe, Honduras, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname.

Despite the Gold Cup setback, the Golden Jaguars must focus on a crucial World Cup Qualifier clash against Nicaragua on June 6.
