Police say motorcyclist in fatal Sheriff St. accident was speeding, not wearing a helmet

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred early Sunday morning at the intersection of Sheriff and Dadanawa Streets, Georgetown.

The crash, which claimed the life of a 27-year-old motorcyclist, involved a motor car, #PWW 9839, driven by 34-year-old Viola Mittelholzer, and motorcycle #CP 4679, ridden by Akilo Johnson.

Johnson, a lawyer, has just graduated from law school and was admitted to the Bar. He was expected to tie he know next month.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the car was travelling north along Sheriff Street when it attempted to turn east onto Dadanawa Street. Meanwhile, the motorcyclist, travelling south at a high speed, collided head-on with the car as he attempted to pass another motorcycle. Johnson, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, was thrown from his bike and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital but was pronounced dead.

Authorities have served a Notice of Intended Prosecution to Mittelholzer, who is currently in custody assisting with the investigation. A breathalyzer test revealed she had alcohol in her system, with readings of 0.16 and 0.10 micrograms.

Investigations continue, with eyewitnesses and vehicle examinations being conducted.
