An estimated $300 million is being spent to construct a ramp and small wharf, as well as to dredge waterways to improve access at the Mon Repos/North De Endragt landing site on the East Coast of Demerara.
This initiative is in keeping with a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a meeting with fisherfolk in September 2024.
During an impromptu visit to the site on Wednesday, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said the works are expected to be completed in two months.

The first phase of the project includes the construction of a shed and landing site for fisherfolk, while the second phase will involve building a ramp to facilitate the easier movement of produce onshore and constructing a small wharf.
The waterway will also be dredged to address a major challenge: the difficulty boats face navigating shallow waters.
“This is another site that we are developing to enhance the work of fisherfolk around the country,” Mustapha said.

The landing site operates on a 24-hour basis and facilitates hundreds of ECD fisherfolk daily.
Upon completion of the works, Mustapha said, “Fishermen will find it easier. They will have better access, improved security, and their boats will be able to move more easily to offload their catches.”
Additionally, solar lights will be installed in the area, along with several tables to assist with the cleaning of fish.
The funds allocated for this project were provided in the 2025 budget.
