First Lady Arya Ali Wednesday officially handed over a new home to single mother Lisa Reddy, along with Reddy’s mother and four children, just in time for the year-end holidays.
The new home, located at Meten-Meer-Zorg on the West Coast of Demerara, is valued at G$15.3 million dollars, including land, building materials, and furnishings.
It was initially intended for a generation of four women. However, Reddy’s 94-year-old grandmother passed away in September.
Speaking at the handing over, the sole breadwinner of the family, 39-year-old Reddy expressed her thanks to God and to the First Lady and her Office.

“Showing so much of interest and input into building a home for a single mother is more than I could ever imagine. This opportunity which I have gotten from her has shown me that she is more than a First Lady to this country.
“I would like to thank her for the greatness she is doing for the less fortunate,” said an emotional Reddy.
Holding back tears, Reddy said her grandmother “missed a big blessing” and “would’ve very much been glad to be a part of this.”
She also said this gesture by the First Lady is “a great one” and is part of “a great initiative” being carried out.
First Lady Ali reiterated the commitment of her Office in advocating and working for the empowerment of women and persons with disabilities.
She further noted that her Office is hoping to build a chicken coop in the backyard. This is to provide Reddy’s mother, who is mute, with an opportunity for financial independence and to contribute to the family.
Reddy said she is sure that her mother, despite being mute, would like to say many thanks to the First Lady. She added that her children, ages 2, 7, 11, and 13 would one day like to do a similar gesture to someone who is also less fortunate.
