A 21-year-old man from West Coast Berbice tragically died after being electrocuted while working with an angle grinder at his home on November 6.
The victim, Claymont “Clay” Doris, was found unresponsive by his girlfriend, Carlica Craig, around 12:30 hrs in the yard of their residence at Lot 79, Lovely Lass Village.
According to Carlica, the couple had returned home from an outing around noon, and Clay immediately began working with the angle grinder on steel.
She briefly stepped out to a nearby shop, and upon her return, she discovered Clay lying on the ground with the grinder resting on his chest. Alarmed, she called for help, and her cousin, police officer Marvin McCurdy, rushed to assist, transporting Doris to Fort Wellington Public Hospital. Sadly, medical staff pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators found the angle grinder had exposed wiring, and burn marks on the left side of Doris’s chest suggested he had been electrocuted. A post-mortem examination by Dr. V. Brijmohan confirmed that Doris died from fibrillation caused by electrocution.
Family members are now making funeral arrangements for the young man, whose tragic death has left the community in shock.
