The 110 houses that are being constructed simultaneously in the first phase of Silica City, located along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, are 50 per cent completed, Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues said on Wednesday.
During a site visit, she told reporters that this housing project was extremely important to the Ministry of Housing and to President Irfaan Ali, who has made certain commitments to ensure that Silica City is built.
“It’s one of our fastest growing communities,” she noted, adding, “All of the infrastructure works, I have been advised today, have been completed.
“So we have all of the road network completed already, we have the utility poles and all of the pipe network has also been installed. The next stage is to ensure we have potable water.”

There are 75 flat units and 35 elevated ones, and according to Rodrigues, they are hoping to wrap up the houses within the next few months.
“I am very pleased with the pace of the work here. Contractors are moving along very nicely here. I’m also very impressed with the units themselves. We used the baseline of the young professional model and we developed those,” she explained.
“These are more modern units, they are bigger, so our beneficiaries get more space in their living rooms and their bedrooms. We incorporated a more modern design that’s aesthetically very beautiful.”
The much-anticipated Silica City is expected to be fully developed by 2030, as its master plan has been completed, President Ali has said.
According to him, Silica City is being developed with key digital technologies, climate-resilient infrastructure, and green, recreational spaces. Each household is also expected to help grow food.
The project aims to address the impacts of climate change and sea level rise, as well as the issues associated with the growth of non-coastal urban settlements.
