The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance could support the establishment of a new Human Rights Academy as there seems to be much interest in learning more about human rights.
This was highlighted by the subject Minister, Gail Teixeira on Saturday when 162 persons graduated from the government’s International Human Rights Law certificate course.
The programme facilitated by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, aimed to educate Guyanese on human rights, international rights and conventions, and Guyana’s constitution and laws.
And Minister Teixeira said individuals in the diaspora and even those in other Caribbean countries want to benefit from this course.
“Maybe in the future, we may need to look at a Human Rights Institute (or) a Human Rights Academy to offer various courses in areas of human rights so some of the issues would be dealt with in a more in-depth way,” she said.
The certificate course was launched in July and concluded in COtober. Nine local experts and ten foreign specialists presented on topics relevant to human rights including freedom of expression, food security and state sovereignty.
And the course was conducted in- person and virtually to accommodate more individuals, including those in hinterland communities.
