In a move to streamline the UK’s immigration process, Guyanese citizens will need to secure an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the United Kingdom (UK), from January 08, 2025.
However, British High Commissioner to Guyana Jane Miller has reassured persons that this change is not targeted specifically at Guyanese travellers and that the process remains straightforward and quick.
In an interview with the News Room on Tuesday, Miller emphasised that the ETA, which costs £10, is not a reintroduction of visas.
Instead, it is a new, simpler digital procedure that all visa-free travellers, including those from nearly 100 other countries, will need to complete.
“There is absolutely no need to worry.
“This is not targeted at Guyanese. It’s a process that will affect travellers from many countries around the world. It’s part of a global effort to modernise and streamline the UK immigration service,” Miller said.
Guyanese citizens, who have enjoyed visa-free travel to the UK since late 2022, will now need to complete the online process before boarding a flight.
From November 27, 2024, travellers will be able to apply for the ETA via the UK government website or the ETA app.
Once granted, the digital authorisation will be valid for up to two years or until the traveller’s passport expires, allowing for multiple visits with stays of up to six months each time.
Miller repeatedly stressed that the process is simple and quick.
“You just go online, upload your passport and a photo, provide contact details, answer a few questions, and pay £10. You’ll receive your authorisation in a matter of minutes, though we advise completing the process at least three days before travelling,” she explained.
The new system is designed to enhance security checks and improve efficiency, providing travellers with a smoother experience when entering the UK.
“It’s very straightforward.
“It’s nothing like the old visa application process with mountains of paperwork. This is quick and easy,” she added.
