Woman dies one day after involved in serious accident at LBI

A serious road traffic accident early Sunday morning resulted in the death of 60-year-old Salima Heeralal.

She succumbed to her injuries at approximately 02:40 hrs on Monday, hours after being admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The incident, which occurred around 06:00 hrs on the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Railway Embankment, involved two vehicles: motor car #PAE 672, driven by 21-year-old Marshall Allicock from Earls Court, and motor car #PAH 5148, owned by Trans Guyana Airway Limited and driven by 58-year-old Prakash Heeralal from Good Hope, East Coast Demerara.

Initial inquiries suggest that motor car PAH 5148 was travelling west along the southern driving lane of the embankment while motor car PAE 672 was exiting the LBI access road.

Allicock failed to stop at the intersection, resulting in a collision with the right side of Heeralal’s vehicle. The impact caused PAH 5148 to strike a bridge on the southern side of the road.

Public-spirited citizens intervened, extracting both Prakash and Salima Heeralal from their vehicle and transporting them to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, where they received immediate medical attention.

Heeralal was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit due to the severity of her injuries.

Meanwhile, Allicock was taken to a private city hospital by a family member, where he was also admitted for observation.

As of Monday morning, a police officer visited the Intensive Care Unit and was informed of Salima Heeralal’s passing. Prakash Heeralal has since been discharged, while Marshall Allicock remains in hospital.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
