Raymond Tinnis, a 49-year-old, was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $8.8 million on Monday after being convicted of drug trafficking.
Tinnis was found guilty in a trial at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Magistrate Mittleholzer.
The charges stemmed from an incident on June 2, 2022, when Tinnis was stopped by officers from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Mahaica Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
At the time, he was alone in his vehicle, which was discovered to contain 9.8 kilograms of cannabis hidden in the trunk.
Following his arrest, Tinnis and the seized drugs were taken to CANU headquarters, where the cannabis was weighed and valued at approximately $3 million.
