Guyana will host the Winfield Braithwaite Caribbean School Boys and Girls Boxing Championship at the National Gymnasium from August 16, showcasing the region’s burgeoning boxing talent.
Now in its eighth year, the tournament has grown significantly from its humble beginnings with just three nations. Suriname, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Lucia will join the host nation this year.
Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) President Steve Ninvalle sees the event as a cornerstone for developing the sport in the region.
“These tournaments are crucial for nurturing our young boxers,” he said. With a record number of participants this year, the championship is poised to be the most competitive yet.
Praised by participating teams as the “Youth Olympics” of Caribbean boxing, the event offers invaluable experience for future champions.
The GBA is committed to using the tournament to elevate the standard of youth boxing in the region.
The GBA has added invitational bouts for elite boxers to further enhance the event. While these matches won’t impact the overall standings, they provide valuable experience for local fighters preparing for regional and international competitions.
The action is scheduled for the next three days from 18:00h each evening.
